Commercial execution for climate and energy

Nearly a decade closing utility-scale deals. 261 MW solar. 565 MWh storage

Services

We work with developers, climate startups, IPPs, and utilities navigating commercial execution.

Commercial Strategy and Execution
Most energy companies lose deals before they ever reach a term sheet. The problem is rarely the technology. It's positioning, pricing, and knowing how the buyer actually makes decisions. Cairn builds GTM strategy, competitive positioning, fundraising narratives, and market research that converts.

Project Execution
Projects don't fail on paper. They fail in interconnection queues, permitting offices, and utility negotiations that drag on for years. Cairn gets projects through those bottlenecks and to financing, through RFP response, PPA negotiation, project siting, and utility relationship management.

Transactions and Diligence
Most diligence misses the risks that actually kill deals: execution timing, offtaker quality, and commercial structure. Cairn underwrites the technical, commercial, and delivery risks that determine whether a project closes. We support deal diligence, acquisition guidance, strategic partnerships, and site-level analysis.

AI & Automation
Sourcing, CRM, and pipeline tracking should not be manual work. Cairn builds the systems that replace that work: Continuous deal sourcing pipelines, self-updating CRMs, and diligence workflows that run without a team.

When to Call Cairn

Your technology works but your pipeline doesn't convert.

You're responding to RFPs and losing to weaker competition.

You need a GTM strategy that maps how utilities actually buy.

You're sitting on data and workflows that should be automated.

You need diligence from someone who has actually built projects.

You're preparing for fundraising but your commercial story isn't landing.

You don’t need another advisor. You need deals to close.

Experience

Sterling Root spent nearly a decade at EDF Renewables, helping contract 261 MW of solar and 565 MWh of battery storage across 19 projects, representing half a billion dollars in contract value.

He worked inside the systems where projects actually break down: interconnection queues, permitting offices, and utility procurement. His experience spans project origination, interconnection strategy, commercial structuring, and deal execution.

Before launching Cairn, he rose from Project Originator to Associate Director of Business Development. He holds an MBA from UC Berkeley Haas and is a Clean Energy Leadership Institute Fellow.

Cairn is built around one thing: getting projects through the bottlenecks where deals actually stall.
